Army Pfc. John D. Amos II, 22, Valparaiso, Indiana
Killed in a bomb attack in Iraq after an "improvised explosive device" hit his military vehicle Sunday in the northern city of Kirkuk. Died April 4, 2004.
Assigned to the 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 25thInfantry Division (Light), Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. He had been in Iraq for two months, said his mother, Susan Amos, of Valparaiso. Amos, the younger of two children, grew up in Griffith before moving to Valparaiso. He joined the Army after graduating from Valparaiso High School in 2002, his mother said.
She said she last heard from her son in a phone message on March 7. Susan Amos said military officials told her that her son was wounded in a suicide attack.
"They told me exactly what happened to him. From what I can remember, they said it was one of those suicide mines. They were just finishing up patrol and he was the rear guard and the shrapnel went into his left leg," she said. His left leg had to be amputated. Medics were unable to revive him when he went into cardiac arrest after he was put on an airplane for evacuation.
