U.S. Army Staff Sgt Michael A. Bechert, 24, Hope, Indiana.
Wounded on 30 May 2007 in Baghdad when his vehicle struck an explosive device. He died on Thursday, 14 June 2007 in San Antonio, Texas, officials said. The army awarded him a Purple Heart for wounds suffered during his first tour of duty.
Bechert was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division based in Schweinfurt, Germany, where he met his wife, Daneila. The couple have a 20 month old son.
He was raised in Indiana by his grandfather, George Bechert.
