U.S. Army Staff Sgt. William Ryan Fritsche, 23, Martinsville, Indiana.

A graduate of Martinsville High School, Staff Sgt. Fritsche was killed in a battle near Kamu, Afghanistan.

Fritsche died of injuries on July 27, 2007 when his dismounted patrol received rocket-propelled grenade and small arms fire. He was the son of Morgan County Sheriff's Department Detective Sgt. Volitta Fritsche.

He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, Vicenza, Italy.

Fritsche joined the Army in 2002, soon after graduating from high school, and was promoted to sergeant in April 2005. He was selected in 2005 to be part of President Bush's inaugural procession in Washington, D.C., as a member of the Old Guard, the Army's oldest active-duty infantry unit.
