Army Sgt Paul Martin Heltzel, 39, of Baton Rouge , Louisiana, formerly of Franklin, Indiana .
Died in Baghdad , Iraq on March 15, 2005. While conducting a mounted patrol a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated. He was assigned to the Army National Guard’s 2nd Battalion, 156th Infantry Regiment, 256th Brigade Combat Team, Eunice , Louisiana .
He was a native of Indiana and a resident of Baton Rouge. He was a graduate of Franklin High School in Franklin, Ind., and served for 18 years in the active military. He joined the National Guard in Indiana and had served in Iraq for 18 months.
Task Force 1/69th Infantry had recently named him Enlisted Soldier of the Year. He was married and is survived, among others, by his wife, Christy M. Wyble-Heltzel and a son, Austin J. Heltzel of New York.
