Indiana Army National Guard Sergeant Gary Henry, 34, Indianapolis, Indiana

Died August 4, 2008 in Baghdad, Iraq of wounds suffered when debris from an improvised explosive device detonation on an overpass fell onto their vehicle.

Henry was a sergeant in the Guard's 38th Military Police Company, a Danville-based unit that trained at Fort Dix, N.J., before shipping out to Iraq in June.

A 12-year veteran of the Indianapolis Fire Department, he had served as a special operations rescue coordinator before he was deployed.

"Captain Henry served the citizens of Indianapolis with pride and dignity," Capt. Gregg Harris, an IFD spokesman, said in a statement Monday. "He served and protected his country with honor."

The Marion County dispatch system was silent for a moment Monday night in Henry's honor.
