Army National Guard Master Sgt. Michael T. Hiester, 33, Bluffton, Indiana.
Died March 26, 2005 in Afghanistan, about 30 miles south of Kabul, with three other Guardsmen when a land mine detonated under their vehicle as they were scouting a location for a shooting range.
He was an Operations Officer with 238th Cavalry Regiment, Bluffton, Indiana and served with that group in Bosnia as part of the Indiana Guard's peacekeeping assignment. Prior to his assignment in Bluffton he was a Training NCO with 1-293d Infantry Battalion, Fort Wayne, Indiana.
He was married and had two children.
"Mike very much believed in the cause for which he gave his life," said his wife, Dawn, in a prepared statement. "His entire family and friends have supported him in his endeavors."
Hiester had planned to finish his military career with the Indiana Guard and become a real estate appraiser in Bluffton.
