Army Pvt. Robert L. McKinley, 23, of Kokomo, Ind.

Died of non-combat related causes in Homberg, Germany. Assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1-101st Air Assault, Fort Campbell, Ky. Died on July 8, 2003.
McKinley was raised by his grandfather, who last saw him at Christmas in 2002. Robert Feller had a feeling then that he might never see his grandson again.
"At that time, I had cancer. I wound up beating the odds."
But McKinley, 23, Kokomo, died in Germany after suffering heatstroke in Iraq.
"The last thing he did before he headed out (to Iraq) was that he called me and my wife and said, 'Grandma and Grandpa, I love you,'" Feller said.
McKinley showed hogs as a 4-H member but lacked focus until joining the Army.
"This was his third trip over there," Feller said. "They told him that when he got home this time, they would give him his green beret."
