Army Reserve PFC Luis A. Perez, 19, Theresa, New York - formerly from East Chicago, Indiana

Died August 27, 2004 in Fallujah, Iraq, when his convoy vehicle hit an improvised explosive device.
Assigned to the 223rd Transportation Company based at Norristown, PA.
All Pvt. Luis Perez ever wanted was to grow up and be a soldier like his father. When he turned 18 last year, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, and two weeks later he was off for training.
"I told him I wanted a grandson, not a hero. He promised me he would come back. He broke that promise," his grandmother, Clara Madrigal said Sunday, shaking her head as family and friends comforted her at her home in East Chicago's Marktown neighborhood.
Perez, 19, died Thursday in Iraq, his mother, Lisa Perez said. She said he was driving a fuel truck outside Fallujah when he hit a land mine, causing a deadly explosion.
"He had only been in Iraq three days," she said.
