Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Jason Profitt, 23, of Charlestown, Indiana.
Profitt died of a non-combat related injury while in the Red Sea. He was assigned to the USS Deyo, home ported in Norfolk, Virginia. Died on March 17, 2003.
Profitt lived for his three young children, and he lived for the Navy.
"He just wanted to provide for his family and country," said his mother, Shelia Profitt. Profitt, 23, met his wife, Rita, in Charlestown, where they both grew up. He died aboard the USS Deyo on the Red Sea, under noncombat circumstances that are still under investigation.
Profitt joined the Navy three years earlier to pay for college and told his mother he wanted to stay through retirement. They watched the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks together on television, and he said then that he might have to go to war soon.
"He was behind this country 100 percent," she said. "He knew he had to be there."
