Army Staff Sgt. Michael Wayne Schafer, 25, formerly from Crown Point and Hobart, Indiana.

  His family moved to Florida when he was in the third grade, said his mother, Karen Barr.

  Schafer, of Spring Hill, Fla., was fatally shot during combat July 25, 2005 in Oruzgan , Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, Vicenza, Italy.

  Barr said her son was leading a squad clearing houses in the town when he was shot. "He was up at the front, squad leader, when somebody shot him from inside a house," she said.

  Schafer joined the Army in 1999. He is survived by his wife, Danielle, and their son, Devin.
