Army Staff Sgt Marvin Lee Trost III, 28, Elkhart, Indiana
Died December 5, 2004 when his vehicle was struck by a rocket- propelled grenade west of Baghdad, in an early attack near Camp Manhattan between Fallujah and Ramadi. He was with the 2nd Infantry Division in an air assault unit that flew Blackhawk helicopters.
Trost grew up in Elkhart County and graduated from Concord High School in Elkhart, had visited home last month while on leave. The family gathered Nov. 15 for dinner.
His grandmother, Virginia Trost, said her grandson told her and her husband, Marvin Lee Trost, that he was concerned that he might not return from his third tour in Iraq, which he began last summer.
"He had a feeling this was going to happen. He told me, ‘Grandma, this time I am afraid,’" she said.
He and his wife, Sherry, a fellow Concord High School graduate, have three children: a daughter, Aubry, 6, and two sons, Levin, 3, and Gabriel, who was born Sept. 7. The family lived at Fort Benning, Ga.
Virginia Trost said her grandson entered the Army when he was 17, right out of high school. After his visit home last month, Trost headed back to Iraq to rejoin his unit, but called home from Atlanta's airport just before his flight departed.
"He called to say goodbye. I just said, ‘I'll see you soon,’" she said, adding, "It's a very tearful time."
