U.S. Army Private Kelly Youngblood, 19, formerly of LaPorte, Indiana.
Died 18 February 2007 in Ramadi, Iraq, by a sniper while getting out of a tank he had been driving.
Youngblood was deployed in January, and had just gotten off his shift when he was fatally shot.
He had been in Iraq for just 16 days before his death, his grandmother, Jean Herrold, of La Porte, told The La Porte County Herald-Argus from Youngblood’s family’s home in Mesa, Ariz., on Wednesday.
Youngblood had kept in touch with his mother, Kristen Chacon, and sister, Melaney Youngblood, by e-mail, but Herrold said none of his family had heard from him in the 11 days before his death.
Youngblood was a graduate of McClintock High School in Tempe, Ariz., and harbored aspirations of going to college after his military time was up, his grandmother said.
A full military funeral will be held for Youngblood in Mesa on March 3, 2007 after which his body will be cremated and transferred to Indiana, where a memorial service will be held on March 10 at Westville United Methodist Church.
Youngblood’s remains will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
